Introduction

Biotechnology was introduced at B.Sc. level at PMB Gujarati Science College, Indore, in 2003. The course was started by the Microbiology Department. In May 2012, it came into its independent existence. The course offered in the Biotechnology Department is B.Sc. (Biotechnology) with intake capacity of 180 students.

Consultancy Services

We not only aim at the pursuit of knowledge but also aim at the applications of knowledge for the welfare of society. We have been providing consultancy services to institutes. These services are with cost to cost charges. We have performed examination of antibacterial and antifungal activity of nano-particals prepared by the students of SGSITS, Indore. Anti Microbial analysys of food samples from Shree Uttam Food Products (Pvt.) Limited has also been performed by us.

Making Ourselves Competent

The Biotechnology department has completed two research projects aided by government.

The staff members are actively engaged in research activities. Dr. Priti Vyas granted a project entitled “ Isolation of MDR pathogens” funded by UGC costing Rs.65,000 from period of 2006 to 2008 and had published papers on the concerned topic in various national and international journals. Another project by Ms Neelam Shivhare got a grant of Rs. 1,05,000 by UGC on the project entitled “Comparison of reactivity of Japanese encephalitis virus raised against monoclonal antibody SA1414-2 with wild type JE7193” and successfully completed the project with in a period of 2 years from 2010-2012.This project included sophisticated techniques of Animal tissue culture like cell line maintenance, cell harvesting etc. which was demonstrated to students also. The research work of faculty and students has been published from time to time.

Departmental Library

The department has its own library with reference books which covers theory and practical syllabus. About 80 books are available in this library covering all the branches of biotechnology of renowned international authors and publishing house. The books of the departmental library are available for ready reference and are accessible to the staff and students. Internet facility is also available in the department which is availed by staff members and occasionally by B.Sc. Final year students.
